Eye Conditions
Eye problems are an extremely common occurrence in humans. The most common error in our eyes are refractive errors. Refractive errors include short or near sightedness, astigmatism (distorted vision at all distances), and presbyopia which is the loss of vision up close (usually occurs between the ages 40-50). This issue can easily be fixed with prescription glasses, contacts, or surgery.
Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is another common eyesight problem. AMD is an eye condition which results in damaged sharp and central vision due to old age. Central vision is essential for seeing objects clearly and completing daily tasks such as reading and driving. AMD also affects the macula (central part of the retina), which allows you to see fine details. Today AMD is estimated to affect about 3 million people and is the leading cause of permanent fine or close up vision damage among people 65 or over.
Lastly, Cataracts. Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide. Cataracts are the clouding of the eye’s lens. They can occur at any age due to many causes. Sometimes cataracts are present at birth. Treatment for cataracts is widely available, however it can be extremely expensive, resulting in many people not able to afford treatment. It is estimated that 30 million people have cataracts worldwide.
