Parts of the Eye
Our eyes are one of the most complex organs in our whole body. All of the parts in the eye must work together so we can see. Our eyes allow us to take in light and observe objects around us in proper colour, detail and depth. Some of the external structures of the eyes include the sclera, which is the white part of the eye. Its main function is to help protect the interior of the eye. Another important external structure is the eyelid. Your eyelids protect the interior of your eyes and are the main barrier that keeps out harmful bacteria that could potentially infect your eye. Other external parts of the eye include the cornea and the conjunctiva glands. The cornea is a clear window that covers the pupil and the iris. Lastly the conjunctiva glands are made up of several different layers of mucus. Their main purpose is to keep the outside of the eye moist.
Interior structures of the eye include the pupil, iris, lens, and retina. These are the main parts of the interior of the eye. The pupil allows light to enter into the eye and the iris controls how much of the light is let in by changing the size of the pupil. The clear lens which is located behind the pupil focuses light on the retina at the back of the eye. Once the light is focused on the retina, the retina will recognize and detect the light so that it can turn it into electrical impulses. All of these interior and exterior structures working together are the reason why we can see and recognize images easily and clearly!
